Every three years when the ELCA Churchwide Assembly is held, amendments are approved to the recommended model constitution for congregations. Such amendments may be made for a variety of reasons, including:
- To clarify provisions that some have found unclear
- To update terminology
- To improve prescribed procedures in light of additional experience gained churchwide
When Christ the Lord restated its constitution and bylaws about a year ago, the Council expressed its intent to further update that document whenever changes to the ELCA model constitution are approved. The most recent churchwide assembly took place in Columbus, Ohio in August 2022, with amendments approved to both required and recommended provisions of the model constitution. The CTL congregation council reviewed the proposed amendments at its meeting on November 14, 2022, and recommended that the congregation approve the changes at its 2023 annual meeting, scheduled for January 29 at 10:00 a.m.
A redline version of the recommended amendments is available HERE, showing proposed insertions and deletions to our current constitution. A paper copy of the proposed changes is also available upon email request to Parish Administrator Janice Aldridge or by calling the church office at 770-963-4499.
If you have questions about the proposed changes, please contact CTL member Sandra Gustavson (; 770-596-4744), who is coordinating this project.
