“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43. 18-19 |
|
Most of us deal with the past in one of two ways: amnesia or nostalgia. I think we can agree that neither one of these is helpful. In amnesia, we have no memory of the past, or, in some cases, such as in “selective amnesia,” we conveniently deny some portions of our past. Amnesia strips a person or people of their identity. However, according to the prophet Isaiah, the people of Israel were not suffering from amnesia. Instead, they were suffering from nostalgia.
We who dwell in nostalgia can ONLY remember the past. We cannot see the present or think about the future. It seems that the people of Israel were far too focused on their past. Isaiah bursts the bubble and says to us all, STOP IT! The prophet demands that the people not focus on the past (the former things) or “consider the things of old.” Instead, they are to look towards the future.
Our past is a part of our identity. It tells the story of how we are where we are, but I believe the prophet Isaiah is speaking to us when he writes, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!” Our mission in the coming days is to perceive the new thing that God is doing so that we may become active participants in the Kingdom of God present amidst us today. Personally, I am excited about the new thing God is doing here at CTL. I hope you are as well.
In His Service
Pastor Brad

Using your favorite material and pattern and neutral colors make them at least six feet long. All completed shawls can be brought to the office or given to a staff member.
